Authorities in Zanzibar have confirmed that the death of a 31-year-old American lifestyle influencer, Ashly Robinson, was the result of suicide, bringing clarity to a case that had initially sparked widespread speculation online.
Robinson, widely known on social media as Ashlee Jenae, died while on holiday in Tanzania with her fiancé. Early reports circulating on global platforms had suggested the possibility of foul play, prompting concern among her followers and the broader public. However, police investigations have since ruled out any criminal involvement.
According to North Unguja Police Commander Benedict Mapujira, the incident occurred on Thursday, April 9, 2026. He stated that Robinson is believed to have hanged herself using a piece of cloth from her dress inside a wardrobe in her hotel room.
“The fiancé, as it was reported, had disagreements, and later hotel management decided to separate their rooms, so the woman had her own room, and the man had his own room,” Mapujira explained, outlining the events leading up to the incident.
Police said the situation was first brought to their attention by hotel staff, who raised concerns that the guest was at risk of self-harm. Emergency response measures were taken immediately after the report was filed at Nungwi Police Station.
“She was still alive when the matter was reported to the police. She was rescued and taken to the hospital. However, she passed away the following day,” Mapujira confirmed, noting that Robinson died on Friday, April 10.

Her body remains in Tanzania as authorities conduct further medical examinations before arrangements are made to repatriate her remains to the United States.
The incident is reported to have taken place at the Zuri Zanzibar, where the couple had been staying during their trip. Social media posts indicate that Robinson had travelled to Zanzibar to celebrate her birthday on April 5.
Reports also suggest that the trip had included a surprise marriage proposal during a safari, an event later described by family members as a joyful and memorable moment. The sudden turn of events has left many of her followers in shock, with tributes continuing to pour in across digital platforms.
The case has once again highlighted the rapid spread of unverified information on social media, particularly in high-profile incidents involving public figures. Authorities have urged the public to rely on official statements and verified sources when seeking information on such sensitive matters.
As investigations conclude, attention is expected to shift toward supporting the family and ensuring proper procedures are followed in returning Robinson’s remains home.
