Growing military tensions in the Middle East have raised fresh concerns about the safety of sensitive nuclear facilities after Russia warned that airstrikes near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power station could create serious risks for the region.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said it is increasingly worried about reports that explosions have been heard only a few kilometers away from the Bushehr plant in southern Iran. The facility, which sits along the Persian Gulf coast, is the country’s only operational nuclear power station and a key part of its civilian energy program.
Speaking to reporters, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Moscow is closely monitoring the situation and urged all sides involved in the conflict to exercise caution. She warned that continued military operations in the area could pose a danger not only to the plant itself but also to the surrounding population.
According to Zakharova, reports of nearby explosions highlight how quickly the situation could become dangerous if military activity moves any closer to the facility. Although there are currently no confirmed reports of damage to the nuclear installation, she stressed that even strikes in the surrounding area could have unpredictable consequences.
The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant was built with assistance from Russia and operates under international monitoring. The plant is designed to generate electricity for civilian use and has long been under the oversight of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations body responsible for monitoring nuclear safety and preventing the spread of nuclear weapons.
Despite its civilian purpose, nuclear infrastructure is considered extremely sensitive during times of conflict. Any accidental damage to such facilities could result in environmental contamination, radiation risks, and humanitarian consequences for nearby communities.
Russia has warned that continued escalation in the region could complicate the ability of international inspectors to carry out their monitoring duties. Officials say maintaining stability around nuclear sites is essential to ensure transparency and safety.
The warning comes amid rising tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States, with military activity and political rhetoric increasing in recent weeks. Analysts say the situation has created a fragile security environment where strategic infrastructure could easily become caught in the crossfire.
