February 10, 2026

The Government of Tanzania has called on China to support its efforts to strengthen modern infrastructure as part of preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.

The appeal was made by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, James Millya, during a recent Chinese New Year celebration event held at the Chinese Embassy in Dar es Salaam.

Millya said preparations for AFCON 2027 go beyond sports, describing the tournament as a strategic opportunity to drive economic transformation through expanded trade, tourism growth, and large-scale infrastructure development. He noted that hosting the continental tournament will require construction and rehabilitation of stadiums that meet international standards, as well as broader upgrades in urban facilities and services.

He added that the competition presents a platform to deepen diplomatic and economic ties between Tanzania, its East African neighbors, and global partners including China.

According to the deputy minister, successful hosting will depend on significant investment in transport systems, social services, and modern sports venues. He pointed to China’s longstanding role as a key partner in major infrastructure projects in Tanzania, saying Chinese expertise and financing could play an important role in delivering priority projects ahead of the tournament.

Tanzania is set to co-host AFCON 2027 with other East African partner states, with governments in the region accelerating preparations to meet continental football governing standards and timelines.
