The president of the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), Boniface Mwabukusi, has emphasized that true national development must ultimately be measured by the well-being and happiness of citizens, which can only be achieved through a trusted and effective judicial system.

Speaking on February 2, 2026, during the celebrations of Law Day in Dodoma, Mwabukusi underscored the constitutional responsibility of the judiciary to uphold stability, integrity, and public confidence, ensuring that citizens feel secure enough to invest their efforts in productive activities.

“The theme for this year, ‘The Judiciary’s Contribution to National Welfare and Development,’ reflects the reality that sustainable economic and social growth cannot exist without the protection of justice and adherence to the rule of law,” Mwabukusi said.

He highlighted that the judiciary must deliver independent and timely rulings that reduce unnecessary disputes, allowing citizens to focus on building the nation rather than being trapped in protracted legal battles. According to Mwabukusi, a transparent, accountable, and accessible judicial system is critical to maintaining public trust and encouraging both domestic and foreign investment.

Mwabukusi noted that the law plays a central role in protecting individual rights and ensuring that all citizens are treated fairly, regardless of social or economic status. “Justice is not just a principle; it is a practical tool for national prosperity. When citizens have confidence in the courts, they are more likely to participate in economic and social development,” he said.

Legal analysts agree that strong judicial institutions are vital for fostering an environment where business, innovation, and civic engagement can thrive. By reducing inefficiencies and corruption, the courts help create a level playing field that benefits all sectors of society.

TLS has also called for increased public awareness and education on legal rights and processes, ensuring that citizens understand how the judiciary can protect their interests and contribute to long-term stability. Mwabukusi emphasized the importance of collaboration between legal professionals, policymakers, and the public to strengthen the justice system.

“The judiciary is the backbone of national development,” he concluded. “Its effectiveness determines whether citizens can confidently pursue opportunities and whether the country can achieve sustained socio-economic growth.”

The Law Day celebrations in Dodoma served as a reminder that legal frameworks, judicial independence, and public trust are inseparable from a nation’s progress. Advocates hope that these discussions will translate into concrete reforms that enhance transparency, efficiency, and accessibility within Tanzania’s court system.
