President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has congratulated Uganda’s President-elect, Yoweri Museveni, following his victory in the country’s general election held on January 15, 2026, reaffirming Tanzania’s commitment to strengthening long-standing bilateral ties between the two neighbouring states.

In an official message released shortly after the announcement of final results, President Samia described Museveni’s win as a reflection of the confidence placed in his leadership and vision by the people of Uganda. She noted that Tanzania looks forward to continued cooperation aimed at deepening the historical, familial, and strategic relationship that has bound the two nations for decades.

“Your victory reflects the trust and confidence of the people of the Republic of Uganda in your leadership and vision,” President Samia said. “I look forward to continuing our joint efforts to strengthen the historic and close relations between our two countries for the benefit of our citizens.”

According to official figures released by Uganda’s Electoral Commission, Museveni secured approximately 7.95 million votes, representing 71.65 percent of valid ballots cast. His closest challenger, opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, garnered about 2.74 million votes, equivalent to 24.72 percent.

The outcome extends Museveni’s tenure into a seventh term, further consolidating his position as one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. First elected in 1986, Museveni has now been in power for nearly four decades, a period marked by significant political stability, economic reforms, and regional security involvement, alongside persistent criticism from opposition groups and civil society over democratic space.

Regional analysts say President Samia’s message underscores the importance Tanzania places on continuity and stability in East Africa, particularly at a time when the region is navigating complex economic pressures, security challenges, and integration efforts under the East African Community framework.

Tanzania and Uganda share deep historical ties, including cross-border trade, energy cooperation, and infrastructure projects such as oil pipelines and transport corridors. Diplomatic observers note that leadership continuity in Kampala is likely to maintain momentum on several joint initiatives critical to regional development.

Museveni’s re-election, however, has not been without controversy. Opposition figures have questioned aspects of the electoral process, raising concerns that echo previous election cycles. While the government maintains that the vote was conducted in accordance with the law, the debate highlights ongoing tensions within Uganda’s political landscape and the broader discussion around governance and democratic reform on the continent.

For Tanzania, President Samia’s diplomatic engagement reflects her broader foreign policy approach, which emphasizes constructive dialogue, regional cooperation, and economic diplomacy. Since taking office, she has positioned Tanzania as a stabilising and pragmatic actor in African politics, prioritising partnerships that deliver tangible benefits to citizens.
