Tanzania’s preparations for hosting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 continue to gain momentum, as construction of the Arusha sports stadium enters an advanced stage, raising confidence in the country’s readiness for the continental football showcase.
During an inspection tour conducted on December 31, 2025, Arusha Regional Commissioner CPA Amos Gabriel Makalla confirmed that construction progress at the stadium has now surpassed 70 percent. The facility is being developed to meet international standards required for major football tournaments and is expected to be among the key venues during AFCON 2027, which Tanzania will co-host with neighboring nations.
Makalla said the pace of work has been supported by timely government funding. Out of the total Sh340 billion earmarked for the project, more than Sh200 billion has already been released. This has ensured that all completed works have been paid for, allowing construction activities to proceed without interruptions linked to funding constraints.
He explained that the project reflects the firm commitment of President Samia Suluhu Hassan to positioning Tanzania as a credible host of AFCON 2027. According to the Regional Commissioner, the President has consistently emphasized close supervision of strategic infrastructure projects, insisting on timely payments and strict adherence to quality standards to ensure completion within schedule.
Beyond football, the stadium is expected to stimulate economic activity in the region. Authorities have encouraged residents of Arusha Region to prepare for opportunities likely to emerge from the tournament, particularly in hospitality, transport, food services, tourism, and other social and commercial sectors.

The arrival of teams, officials, supporters, and international media is projected to boost local businesses and create employment opportunities.
Arusha already enjoys international recognition as a tourism hub and diplomatic center. The hosting of AFCON matches is expected to further elevate the city’s global profile, providing Tanzania with a platform to showcase its culture, hospitality, and investment potential to a wider audience.
During the visit, Makalla also congratulated the national football team, Taifa Stars, for advancing to the round of 16 in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco. He described the achievement as a source of national pride and an encouraging sign of progress in Tanzanian football as the country prepares for its hosting role.
Football stakeholders note that timely completion of venues such as the Arusha stadium is crucial in meeting requirements set by the Confederation of African Football. With construction progressing steadily and funding assured, optimism continues to grow that Tanzania will be fully prepared to host a successful AFCON 2027 tournament.
