Tanzania’s New PM Directed to Serve All Citizens

Many emphasised that the real test lies in delivering on the commitments made: tightening the fight against graft, holding lazy public servants to account, and resolving day‑to‑day concerns that affect ordinary Tanzanians.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan officially appointed Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba as Prime Minister. She made a pointed reminder: the role he now holds is not meant for friends, family, or personal allies but for the benefit of the entire citizenry.

“Your burden is not small,” President Samia told him after his nomination was endorsed by parliament. “At your age the many influences — friends, relatives, acquaintances — are many. But your position does not belong to friends. It does not belong to family. It is an office to serve this nation.”

The appointment was met with approval and expectation across the country. In his home region of Tabora, residents applauded his extensive experience in government and expressed hope that he will address longstanding challenges—from corruption to unresponsive public service. Others were more cautious, urging him not just to promise change but to act.

“In his term as Prime Minister we ask that the things he said here are carried out in deeds, because citizens face many problems,” some local residents remarked.

Nchemba takes office at a crucial time. The vote in parliament approving his nomination passed unanimously, following his nomination by President Samia. His background—most recently as Minister of Finance—marks him out as a technocrat with experience in economic and administrative affairs.

Yet President Samia’s warning highlights the underlying challenge: the influences and pressures that come with high office remain real. Navigating them while keeping the public interest front and centre will be key. The role of Prime Minister of Tanzania historically involves leading government business in parliament and coordinating ministries.
