The Member of Parliament for Ilala, Mussa Azzan Zungu has been overwhelmingly elected as the new Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania, securing 378 out of 383 votes cast.
The election took place today, 11 November 2025, at the Parliament chamber in Dodoma, marking the formal start of the 13th Parliament’s session.
Zungu, who previously served as Deputy Speaker since 2022, succeeds Tulia Ackson, who chose not to run for re-election. In this contest, Zungu defeated five other candidates representing opposition and smaller parties, demonstrating broad support across the chamber.
In his acceptance speech, Zungu promised to preside with impartiality and to strengthen parliamentary processes. “Our role is not only to pass legislation but to ensure that the voice of every citizen is heard, and that Parliament remains a strong pillar of democracy,” he stated.
Political analysts say Zungu’s election comes at a pivotal moment for Tanzania. The 13th Parliament is expected to tackle a wide-ranging legislative agenda, including public governance reforms, economic development initiatives, and regional diplomatic matters.

Zungu’s experience within parliamentary committees and leadership roles positions him as a stabilizing figure who can foster dialogue across party lines and ensure effective lawmaking.
Observers note that while Zungu has a strong mandate, the real test will be balancing the majority’s priorities with the inclusion of minority voices, maintaining legislative independence, and enhancing transparency. The performance of the five opposition candidates, who remain active MPs, will also play a critical role in shaping cross-party collaboration.
Zungu’s rise to Speaker reflects his long-standing career in Tanzanian politics and parliamentary leadership. His election signals continuity in the legislative framework while also offering opportunities for reform and efficiency in parliamentary oversight.
