Tanzania Citizens Resume Daily Life After Election Turmoil

The temporary internet shutdown was intended to curb misinformation and allow security forces to stabilize affected areas
November 4, 2025

Following a period of disruption linked to the recent general election, Tanzanian authorities have announced that citizens can resume normal economic and social activities starting Tuesday, 4 November 2025.

The decision follows guidance from President Samia Suluhu Hassan during her inauguration speech, signaling a return to everyday routines nationwide.

The announcement comes after heightened tensions during the 29 October 2025 elections, which saw protests erupt across the country. Many young Tanzanians, particularly from the Gen-Z demographic, participated in demonstrations that turned destructive, damaging both public infrastructure and private property. To maintain public safety, the government temporarily instructed workers to remain home and suspended internet access for six days, from 29 October to 3 November 2025.

The temporary internet shutdown was intended to curb misinformation and allow security forces to stabilize affected areas. Authorities emphasized that these measures were aimed at preserving peace and protecting citizens, giving the government time to assess the situation and issue official directives.

In its latest communication, the government urged citizens to resume normal activities while remaining vigilant. Compliance with local law enforcement guidelines and security advisories was strongly encouraged to ensure safety and order as daily operations across commerce, transport, manufacturing, and public services gradually restart.

Officials stressed that the resumption of routine life does not signal the end of security concerns. Citizens are reminded to stay alert, particularly in areas that experienced unrest, and to cooperate with authorities in maintaining public order.

The overall message underscores a careful balance: while Tanzanians are encouraged to return to markets, workplaces, and other social activities, this revival of normal life must proceed alongside continued attention to security, ensuring that the nation remains stable and orderly as it emerges from the election-related disturbances.
