Zanzibar’s ACT-Wazalendo presidential candidate, Othman Masoud Othman, has pledged to transform the island’s fisheries sector into a formal industry that significantly contributes to the economy.
Speaking to fishermen and fish-drying entrepreneurs in Mangapwani, North B District, Unguja, Othman highlighted the underutilisation of Zanzibar’s marine resources, including seaweed and sardines, which have been reduced to political rhetoric without practical implementation.
He criticised the current system where foreigners benefit from the fisheries sector, leaving local communities at a disadvantage. Othman vowed that his government would formalise the sector, ensuring that Zanzibar’s sardines are sold globally. He also addressed the outdated fish-drying methods, such as using mats and solar energy, which are ineffective during the rainy season. Othman promised to modernise these practices to make the industry more efficient.

Additionally, Othman pledged to provide affordable loans to small and medium-sized enterprises, particularly those dependent on marine resources, to enhance their livelihoods. Residents of Mangapwani expressed optimism following Othman’s visit, with some noting that it was the first time a government leader or presidential candidate had visited the area.
Othman’s commitment to reforming the fisheries sector aligns with his broader vision of empowering local communities and ensuring that Zanzibar’s natural resources benefit its people. His proposals aim to address long-standing challenges in the sector and promote sustainable economic development.
