Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump are scheduled to meet in Alaska on Friday for a landmark summit aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The summit, taking place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson near Anchorage, represents the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since the escalation of the war. While it remains uncertain whether the talks will produce a formal peace agreement, many observers in Moscow have expressed cautious optimism. One resident remarked, “This conflict with Ukraine must end someday, so I expect some form of compromise will be reached.” Another added, “It’s significant that the first step has already been taken; there will surely be some benefit.”

This meeting marks the first time Putin will travel to the United States since 2015, when he attended the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Since the U.S. is not a party to the International Criminal Court, which issued a 2023 arrest warrant against Putin for alleged war crimes, he faces no risk of detention while in the country.

Analysts suggest Putin views the summit as an opportunity to consolidate Russia’s influence over territories it has seized, prevent Ukraine from joining NATO, and limit the presence of Western troops within the country. These strategic objectives appear aimed at gradually extending Moscow’s leverage in the region.

While the full agenda of the summit has not been disclosed, experts expect discussions to cover security arrangements, potential ceasefires, and territorial negotiations. The exclusion of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from the initial meeting has drawn criticism, though Trump has indicated that future talks including Zelenskyy and European leaders may follow.

Observers caution that any breakthrough will be difficult, given the deeply entrenched positions of both sides. Nonetheless, the summit is closely watched globally, with hopes that dialogue between the two leaders could at least set the stage for de-escalation and eventual conflict resolution.

The Alaska talks highlight the complexity of international diplomacy, where strategic interests, security concerns, and humanitarian crises intersect. The outcome could have far-reaching implications for European security, the future of Ukraine, and global geopolitical stability.
