Vice-President Dr. Philip Mpango has called on the Tanzania Police Force to strengthen their efforts in monitoring online spaces as the country approaches its upcoming General Election.

Speaking at the annual conference for senior police officers held at the Tanzania Police School in Moshi on August 11, 2025, Dr. Mpango emphasized the growing risks posed by misinformation and inflammatory content spreading across social media and other digital platforms.

He urged the police to work hand in hand with the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) and other government bodies to actively detect and swiftly respond to any content that could incite violence or break the law.

Dr. Mpango also highlighted concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence technologies, cautioning that AI-generated fake images and videos of political candidates could threaten peace and stability during this sensitive period.

“The police must be ready to conduct thorough cyber patrols and take immediate legal action where necessary,” he said, stressing the importance of preparedness.

This directive comes at a time when countries worldwide are grappling with the challenges posed by digital misinformation, especially during elections. Tanzania’s focus on cybersecurity reflects its commitment to safeguarding democratic processes and ensuring a peaceful electoral environment.

Additionally, authorities plan to boost public awareness campaigns to help citizens recognize and report false information online, reinforcing a community approach to combating misinformation.
