Miguel Uribe, a leading candidate in the upcoming Colombian presidential race, tragically passed away late Monday night, nearly two months after he was critically wounded in a shooting incident during his election campaign.

The 39-year-old senator from the conservative party had been showing encouraging signs of recovery in recent weeks. However, doctors revealed that he suffered a severe brain hemorrhage on Saturday, which led to his untimely death.

Uribe was shot in both the head and leg on June 7, 2025, while addressing supporters at a public rally in Bogotá, Colombia’s capital city. The attack sent shockwaves through the nation, raising urgent questions about political violence and security in the country.

Authorities have since arrested six suspects linked to the shooting, including a teenager aged 15. Investigations into the motives and circumstances surrounding the attack are ongoing.

The death of Uribe, who was widely expected to challenge the incumbent president, Gustavo Petro, has stirred fears about a potential return to political unrest in a country that has historically struggled with violence tied to politics.

In response, Colombian officials have stepped up security around other candidates and political events to ensure the safety of those participating in the democratic process. International observers and local leaders alike have called for calm and peaceful engagement as the nation prepares for its elections.
