As the country gears up for the 2025 General Election, media professionals across Tanzania have been urged to focus on promoting national cohesion and to remain vigilant in protecting personal data during election coverage.

This call was made during a recent training workshop held in Dar es Salaam for editors and journalists preparing to cover the highly anticipated polls.

The training session aimed to prepare media practitioners to report responsibly in a politically sensitive environment. Discussions included the legal frameworks that govern elections, ensuring that media coverage remains fair, impartial, and in line with the country’s electoral laws.

One of the key areas of emphasis was data protection, which is increasingly important in the digital age. Journalists were reminded of the importance of handling voters’ and candidates’ personal information with care to prevent breaches of privacy or misuse, especially during politically charged periods.

Participants were also briefed on the broadcasting regulations introduced in 2020, which set clear standards for how political parties should be covered on radio and television. These regulations aim to ensure equal airtime and prevent biased reporting, promoting a level playing field during campaigns.

In addition, the training covered best practices for reporting during conflicts and emergencies—situations that can arise in tense election periods. Journalists learned how to provide accurate, balanced information without inflaming tensions, supporting peace and stability.

Media guidelines specifically developed for the 2025 General Election were also introduced. These guidelines encourage responsible journalism that supports democratic participation and national peace.

The media’s role in elections has become increasingly influential worldwide. This workshop reflects broader efforts by institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and media regulators to uphold ethical journalism standards and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.

With the election date drawing nearer, the public will rely heavily on the media for reliable information. Ensuring that coverage is accurate, fair, and respects personal privacy is vital for maintaining public trust.
