The Rural Energy Agency (REA) is implementing a TSh 9,400,799,626.70 project to distribute 200,000 improved cookstoves—commonly known as energy-efficient stoves—across Tanzania, subsidized at rates between 80% and 85%.

This announcement was made on August 4, 2025, by the REA representative in Morogoro Region, Engineer Cecilia Msangi, during the introduction of the service provider awarded the tender to distribute the stoves in the region. The contract was awarded to Burn Manufacturing, a clean cooking technology company operating in East Africa.

“The Agency is implementing the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy through various initiatives, including this improved stove distribution project, which we are officially launching today for the people of Morogoro,” said Engineer Msangi.

She expressed gratitude to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, for championing the national campaign for clean cooking energy. Msangi emphasized that through the President’s direct efforts, several steps have been taken to protect women from the harmful effects of indoor air pollution caused by firewood and charcoal, while also promoting environmental conservation.

She noted that President Samia had issued specific directives to ensure citizens are empowered to transition away from the use of traditional biomass fuels. This aligns with the National Strategy, which aims to ensure that by 2034, 80% of Tanzanians use clean cooking energy solutions.

“Previously, without the subsidy, each stove was priced at TSh 73,468.36. But now, with an 80% subsidy, the stove will be sold for just TSh 14,700,” Msangi explained.

Meanwhile, Morogoro Regional Administrative Secretary, Mr. Mussa Mussa, applauded REA’s efforts, noting that the benefits from this project will exceed initial expectations—especially in terms of health, safety, and environmental protection.

In addition, John Mtui, regional representative of Burn Manufacturing, stated that the company had secured a contract to distribute 39,286 improved stoves across the regions of Morogoro, Ruvuma, Kagera, and Tabora, with the total contract value amounting to TSh 2,309,022,392.77.
