The Ministry of Health has officially confirmed the first two cases of Mpox in the country, marking a significant public health concern.
The announcement was made by Health Minister Jenister Mhagama on Monday, March 10, 2025, after laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the virus in two individuals.
According to the ministry, both patients had exhibited symptoms associated with Mpox, including skin rashes on their faces, hands, and feet, along with fever, headaches, sore throats, and body aches. The cases were first reported on March 7, 2025, prompting health officials to conduct thorough investigations and testing.
One of the infected individuals is a cargo driver who had recently traveled from a neighboring country to Dar es Salaam. Health authorities collected samples from both patients and sent them to the National Laboratory, which confirmed the infections on March 9.
News of the suspected cases had already begun circulating days before the official announcement, following the release of a video showing the two individuals in isolation in the Majani ya Chai area of Kipawa, Dar es Salaam.
In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with local government authorities, has ramped up surveillance efforts to detect any additional cases and prevent further spread. The public has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases immediately.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that primarily spreads through close physical contact with infected individuals or contaminated materials.

While most cases result in mild to moderate illness, severe cases can occur, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Tanzania’s health authorities are working closely with international health organizations to implement containment measures. Citizens are encouraged to practice good hygiene, avoid unnecessary physical contact, and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms.
The government has assured the public that all necessary precautions are being taken to manage the outbreak effectively. Meanwhile, health experts continue to monitor the situation closely as investigations into the source of the infection remain ongoing.
