Mourners gathered in Dar es Salaam to pay their last respects to the late Professor Philemon Sarungi, a respected orthopaedic surgeon, former Cabinet minister, and dedicated public servant.
The 88-year-old, who passed away last week, was laid to rest at Kinondoni Cemetery following an emotional farewell ceremony at Karimjee Grounds.
Family members, government officials, politicians, and members of the public came together to honor his life and legacy. While some of his children could not attend in person, they shared their heartfelt tributes through recorded messages.
Maria Sarungi, who lives in Nairobi, Kenya, expressed deep sorrow over her absence, citing security concerns beyond her control. In her message, she reflected on her father’s wisdom, referencing his book Maisha ni Mapambano (Life is a Struggle), which highlighted values of courage, equality, and humanity.
“He always told us that all people are equal, regardless of their background,” she said. She also spoke about his unwavering commitment to helping others, even after retirement. “Though I cannot be there, I believe we will meet again, father,” she added emotionally.

Dr. Emöke Sarungi, another of his children, shared her gratitude for the time they spent together and said she finds comfort in knowing his legacy will live on through his grandchildren. Martin Sarungi echoed the same sentiment, vowing to honor his father’s teachings and values.
Throughout his career, Professor Sarungi made significant contributions to Tanzania, both in the medical field and in government service. Many speakers at the ceremony described him as a visionary leader, a mentor, and a patriot whose work had a lasting impact on the nation.
As the sun set over Dar es Salaam, his loved ones and fellow Tanzanians bid him a final farewell, remembering not only his achievements but also the kindness and wisdom he shared with those around him.
