The Tanzanian government has reiterated its commitment to providing legal support for the successful implementation of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project.
Attorney General Hamza Johari made this assurance during a meeting with EACOP officials at his office in Kivukoni, Dar es Salaam. He emphasized that the Attorney General’s Office is ready to offer the necessary legal guidance to ensure the project proceeds smoothly.
“We are committed to supporting this project in all legal aspects to facilitate its timely completion,” Johari stated.
The EACOP project, a joint initiative between Uganda and Tanzania, involves constructing a 1,443-kilometer pipeline to transport crude oil from Uganda’s Lake Albert region to Tanzania’s Tanga port. This pipeline is expected to significantly boost the economies of both countries by enhancing their oil export capabilities.
During the meeting, EACOP’s Legal Manager, Stanley Mabiti, expressed appreciation for the Tanzanian government’s ongoing support.
“We are grateful for the cooperation we continue to receive from the Attorney General’s Office. Their assistance has been crucial in helping us navigate legal and regulatory matters,” Mabiti said.
As of now, the project has reached about 47% completion, with expectations for full operation by mid-2026. Despite facing financing hurdles partly due to concerns raised by environmental groupsstakeholders have remained committed to keeping the project on track.

In response to funding challenges, investors have restructured financial strategies, and additional contributions have been secured to sustain progress. The Tanzanian government has also issued key approvals, allowing construction activities to continue without delays.
Once operational, the pipeline is expected to transport up to 230,000 barrels of oil per day, making it a game-changer for the region’s energy sector. Beyond economic benefits, the project is anticipated to create job opportunities and stimulate related industries in both Tanzania and Uganda.
With the Tanzanian government reaffirming its legal backing and stakeholders working together to resolve challenges, the EACOP project is steadily moving towards completion, promising economic growth and regional development.
