The Tanzanian passport has solidified its place as a valuable travel document, maintaining its position as the 69th most powerful globally.
This ranking allows Tanzanian passport holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 73 destinations worldwide, reflecting a steady enhancement of the country’s global mobility.
This progress builds on last year’s impressive performance, when the passport jumped five spots in the Henley Passport Index, moving from 74th to 69th. The number of accessible destinations also increased from 67 to 72, showcasing Tanzania’s growing international connectivity.
According to the latest Henley Passport Index Report, released on January 12, 2025, Tanzania is among the top ten African nations for passport strength. The country ranks 10th on the continent, following Seychelles, Mauritius, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Malawi, and Kenya. Seychelles leads the region and holds the 25th spot globally.
The Henley Passport Index, an annual ranking produced in partnership with the International Air Transport Association (IATA), evaluates the strength of passports based on the number of destinations holders can access without requiring a visa.
On a global level, Singapore remains at the top, offering its passport holders visa-free access to 195 destinations, making it the world’s most powerful travel document.
For Tanzania, these advancements reflect the government’s efforts to strengthen diplomatic relations and negotiate favorable travel agreements. Enhanced passport strength not only facilitates smoother travel for citizens but also fosters economic, cultural, and educational exchanges with other nations.
