The Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Hon. Abdallah Ulega, has announced that his ministry has set a strategy to begin fish farming in ponds and rice paddies to increase the availability of fish and boost income for citizens.
Minister Ulega made these remarks during his visit to the Mpitimbi B Fish Farming Group in Mpitimbi, Ruvuma Region, on September 21, 2024.
“This year, we have a plan to farm fish in ponds and rice paddies. The aim is to spread this knowledge to more people, enabling them to engage in fish farming, thereby increasing the availability of fish and improving their income,” he stated.

He emphasized that the Sixth Phase Government, under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is committed to uplifting its citizens through productive sectors. This includes enabling many young people to enter the fish farming industry to help them achieve economic independence.
The District Commissioner of Songea, Hon. Wilman Kapenjama, added that if this strategy succeeds, it will help many young people to rise economically. He affirmed that the district is ready to collaborate with the ministry to ensure the successful implementation of fish farming in rice paddies, so that the residents of Songea and its surrounding areas can consistently access fish as a source of food.
