Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s announcement of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, while accusing Moscow of continuing attacks on critical infrastructure and calling for the proposed truce to become reality.

In a statement, Zelensky described the announcement as good news for everyone, but said Russian attacks continued throughout the day, involving Shahed drones, glide bombs and strikes on energy facilities. He reported that a power plant in Kharkiv was attacked during the evening.

According to Zelensky, Russian forces carried out more than 200 strikes on Ukraine’s electricity generation and transmission facilities during the preceding week, alongside 17 attacks targeting gas and oil infrastructure. He also claimed that the attacks had killed more than 150 people and injured over 700 during the same period.

The Ukrainian leader said Kyiv had repeatedly proposed measures to reduce hostilities, but accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of rejecting its de-escalation initiatives.

“Ukraine wants peace. The question is whether Russia does,” Zelensky said, adding that Ukraine’s armed forces had received the necessary orders and were awaiting clear details of the discussions between Washington and Moscow.

Trump’s announcement has raised hopes of a temporary reduction in attacks on energy infrastructure, which has been a major target during the war. A sustained halt could help protect civilians, stabilise electricity supplies and reduce pressure on essential services.

However, the terms and implementation of the proposed ceasefire remain crucial. An announcement alone does not guarantee that attacks will stop, particularly without clear commitments and mechanisms to monitor compliance.

Zelensky said Ukraine expected Putin to follow through on Trump’s announcement, stressing that Kyiv was prepared to support steps leading to a genuine and lasting peace.

The development places renewed attention on US diplomatic efforts to end the war, while leaving the key question of Russia’s commitment to the proposed energy truce unresolved.
