Zanzibar Cargo Delays Persist Amid Congestion

Prolonged delays here not only disrupt local businesses but could have wider implications for regional trade networks that depend on reliable maritime logistics.
July 7, 2025

Cargo deliveries destined for Zanzibar have been significantly delayed due to ongoing congestion at Malindi Port, disrupting shipping schedules and affecting supply chains, according to a recent advisory from a major international shipping company.

Vessels awaiting berthing at Zanzibar’s main port are currently experiencing waiting times of approximately 35 days. This backlog is largely caused by the prioritization of bulk cargo ships carrying essential food supplies and other critical goods meant for local consumption. The congestion, which began in February, has severely impacted the timely arrival of other types of cargo shipments headed to the islands.

Efforts to ease the situation, including the deployment of additional feeder vessels to facilitate cargo movement, have also been hindered by congestion at alternative berths, further complicating logistics operations.

The Zanzibar Ports Authority (ZPA) has acknowledged the challenge and assured stakeholders that it is working closely with shipping lines to address the unprecedented congestion. Several key initiatives are underway to restore smoother port operations and reduce delays.

Malindi Port, a vital gateway for Zanzibar’s trade, plays a significant role in the movement of goods within East Africa and internationally. Prolonged delays here not only disrupt local businesses but could have wider implications for regional trade networks that depend on reliable maritime logistics.

Industry analysts warn that unless port congestion is resolved promptly, supply chains may continue to face disruption, potentially affecting the availability and cost of essential goods on the island.

The situation highlights the critical need for infrastructure improvements and enhanced port management to support Zanzibar’s growing trade demands and economic development.
