The Police Force has inaugurated a new maternity ward at the Field Force Unit (FFU) dispensary in Ukonga, Dar es Salaam, in a move aimed at strengthening maternal healthcare services for police personnel and other eligible patients.
The facility was officially launched on October 15, 2026, with Commissioner for Administration and Human Resource Management, Police Commissioner Tatu Jumbe, urging dispensary leaders to ensure the building is properly used for its intended purpose.
Jumbe emphasised the importance of responsible management of the new facility to ensure it delivers the expected healthcare benefits and supports improvements in maternal and child health services.
The maternity ward was constructed using the dispensary’s internally generated revenue, demonstrating how locally collected resources can be directed towards improving healthcare infrastructure and expanding service capacity.

Speaking during the event, the dispensary’s Chief Medical Officer, Superintendent of Police Charles Kabajuguta, pledged to maintain professionalism, discipline and patriotism while ensuring that healthcare services comply with regulations established by the Ministry of Health.
He also committed to upholding high standards of service delivery to produce positive outcomes and support the continued development of the dispensary.
The establishment of the maternity ward is expected to strengthen the facility’s capacity to provide services related to pregnancy and childbirth. Adequate maternity infrastructure can help improve access to care, support safer deliveries and contribute to better outcomes for mothers and newborns when accompanied by qualified health workers, essential equipment and appropriate referral services.
Magreth Sidodo, Special Seats Councillor for Ukonga Ward, thanked Inspector General of Police Camillus Wambura for supporting the construction of the facility. She pledged continued cooperation with the dispensary’s management and called for proper care of the building and its medical equipment.
Maintaining the facility and protecting its equipment will be essential to ensuring that the investment delivers long-term benefits. Regular maintenance, adequate staffing and the availability of essential medical supplies are also important for sustaining reliable maternal healthcare services.
The new maternity ward forms part of efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure within police facilities. Its effective management and use are expected to contribute to better access to maternal services in Ukonga and strengthen the dispensary’s role in providing healthcare to the community it serves.
