Tz, Grants Amnesty for National ID Corrections, Urges Citizens

Authorities hope that correcting these records will strengthen the integrity of national ID data and increase public confidence in official documentation.
December 20, 2025

The Government of Tanzania has announced a special amnesty allowing citizens who previously registered with incorrect personal information in the National Identification Authority (NIDA) database to update their details without fear of legal repercussions.

This initiative is designed to correct long-standing errors and ensure national records accurately reflect the identities of all Tanzanians.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam, Home Affairs Minister George Simbachawene encouraged individuals who may have used someone else’s name, provided incorrect birth data, or submitted faulty documents during registration to visit their nearest NIDA office and apply for corrections. Authorities emphasized that this is a time-limited opportunity aimed at regularizing citizen records.

NIDA, which maintains the National Population Register, has faced challenges in ensuring all registrations are accurate. Errors in personal records have created difficulties for citizens in accessing services, employment, and participation in civic activities. The amnesty allows affected individuals to correct these discrepancies safely.

Eligible citizens are required to provide verified documents such as birth certificates, academic records, or other legal proof of identity. Those who come forward during this amnesty period will not face prosecution, provided their applications are honest and substantiated.

The one-year amnesty aligns with Tanzania’s broader efforts to modernize its identification system. Authorities hope that correcting these records will strengthen the integrity of national ID data and increase public confidence in official documentation.

Government officials urge all Tanzanians to take advantage of this opportunity promptly, as delays may result in missed deadlines and future complications. The amnesty reflects the administration’s commitment to both legal compliance and citizen welfare.
