Tanzania’s Minister for Constitutional Affairs and Law, Dr. Damas Ndumbaro, addressed the growing concern over the abuse of power, assuring citizens that the government would not tolerate any actions that undermine justice and oppress the vulnerable.

Speaking at the launch of the Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign in Kilombero District, Morogoro Region, Ndumbaro emphasized that anyone using their position for personal gain at the expense of others would face severe consequences.

“The Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign is about ensuring equal access to justice for all, especially those who are often neglected due to their economic status,” Ndumbaro said. “Anyone who uses their position to oppress the less fortunate undermines the very foundation of this campaign, which stands for justice, equality, peace, and development.”

The legal aid campaign is part of an ongoing effort by President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government to tackle long-standing challenges in Tanzania’s legal system. Ndumbaro pointed to the recent formation of a criminal justice committee that had reviewed the country’s entire legal framework. The committee’s recommendations will soon be put into action, ensuring that the legal process is fair and efficient for all Tanzanians, regardless of their background.

Highlighting some of the government’s recent legal advancements, Ndumbaro shared the successful launch of the online court system, which allows individuals to participate in court hearings from remote locations. This move is expected to make justice more accessible, particularly for people who live far from courtrooms. As part of the initiative, the government is also working to expand these services to all prisons, giving inmates a better opportunity to manage their cases and file appeals without leaving their confinement.

The Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign specifically targets low-income individuals, aiming to make legal services accessible to those who need them most. This initiative is part of the government’s larger goal of fostering a society where justice is not just a concept, but a reality for everyone.
