Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Hon. Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, represented President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan at the inauguration of Iran’s new President, Hon. Masoud Pezeshkian. The ceremony took place on July 30, 2024, at the Iranian Parliament grounds in Tehran.
Upon arriving in Tehran early on July 30, Minister Kombo participated in the swearing-in ceremony and then attended a reception with diplomats and world leaders at the White House in Tehran.

In his address, Minister Kombo congratulated President Pezeshkian on his election victory, emphasizing the historical and cultural ties between Tanzania and Iran. He noted that these relations date back to when Iranians from Shiraz settled in Zanzibar, introducing Iranian culture and the Persian language.
On July 31, 2024, Minister Kombo held a meeting with President Pezeshkian, making him the first foreign minister to engage with the new Iranian leader shortly after his inauguration. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including politics, culture, and the economy.
President Pezeshkian expressed his appreciation for President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s congratulatory message and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Tanzania-Iran relations. He proposed a consultation meeting of the economic commission to draft a new Cooperation Agreement.
Minister Kombo outlined Tanzania’s plans to advance bilateral relations, including preparations for the Joint Cooperation Commission (JPC) meeting, a business conference, and facilitating official exchanges to address visa issues.
Additionally, Minister Kombo met with Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister, Hon. Ali Bagheri, to discuss and agree on important issues aimed at enhancing diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two countries.
