Tanzania and South Africa have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic cooperation through continued collaboration in key sectors including trade, agriculture, and industry.

This renewed commitment was reached during a bilateral meeting between Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Hon. Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, and South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Hon. Ronald Lamola, held at the ministry’s offices in Dar es Salaam.

The high-level meeting was attended by senior officials from both governments, including Ambassador Dr. Samwel Shelukindo, Permanent Secretary in the Tanzanian Foreign Ministry; Mr. Gerald Mweli, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture; Dr. Hashil Abdallah, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry and Trade; Tanzania’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Hon. James Lord; and South Africa’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Hon. Noluthando Mayende-Malepe.

During the discussions, both ministers agreed to intensify cooperation by conducting regular consultations to identify and eliminate obstacles to economic collaboration between the two nations.

Minister Kombo highlighted Tanzania’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, saying, “I wish to reaffirm the commitment of the Government of Tanzania to enhancing bilateral cooperation, especially in advancing economic cooperation for the mutual benefit of our people. By maintaining, sustaining and promoting our enduring partnership, we can achieve even greater success.”

He further called upon stakeholders from both countries to increase collaboration in trade and agriculture, encouraging the business community to seize emerging opportunities.

Minister Lamola emphasized South Africa’s readiness to implement signed bilateral agreements by preparing a joint implementation and monitoring framework. He added that both countries must fast-track the finalization of various pending agreements and memoranda of understanding to solidify the partnership.

It is important to establish a monitoring mechanism to address the agreed issues effectively. South Africa will ensure that its officials work jointly with their Tanzanian counterparts to resolve any challenges and promote economic cooperation,” he stated.

Lamola also encouraged the private sectors in both nations to actively engage in trade and investment initiatives, underlining the importance of creating a conducive environment for sustainable economic growth.

The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to maintain regular engagements and build on the historic and strategic partnership that has existed between the two countries since the era of anti-apartheid solidarity and liberation movements.
