President of Tanzania and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has urged military leaders to strengthen the country’s national defence while remaining neutral and professional, warning against any actions that could damage the reputation of the armed forces.

The remarks were made on December 15, 2025, during the official opening of the 9th Conference of the Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Commanders at the Air Defence Military School in Tanga Region. Addressing senior officers, President Samia emphasized that the Tanzania People’s Defence Force exists solely to protect the nation and its citizens, regardless of political parties or affiliations.

“Do not allow our army to be compromised,” she said, highlighting that the military must stay out of politics. She added that whether it is CCM, CHADEMA, or any other political group, the armed forces’ mandate is to safeguard the country’s security without bias.

President Samia also stressed that national defence is a cornerstone of peace and development. “There can be no development without peace. Our armed forces play a key role in maintaining both internal and external security, ensuring that citizens can participate fully in development activities,” she said. Her message reinforced the idea that strong defence institutions are essential for creating a stable environment conducive to social and economic growth.

Experts note that her statements reflect the critical importance of a professional and apolitical military in maintaining public trust and national stability. By keeping the armed forces focused on defence rather than politics, Tanzania strengthens its capacity to respond to both internal and external threats effectively.

The President also highlighted the TPDF’s role in regional stability, noting that a disciplined and neutral military contributes not only to domestic peace but also to Tanzania’s broader participation in regional security initiatives. She encouraged commanders to continue modernizing capabilities, enhancing operational readiness, and upholding professional ethics to meet current and future security challenges.

The conference brought together senior military leaders from across the country to review defence strategies, discuss modernisation plans, and strengthen the forces’ capacity to protect the nation. President Samia’s address served as a reminder that a professional, neutral, and accountable military is essential for the long-term stability, security, and development of Tanzania.

By emphasizing neutrality, professionalism, and commitment to citizens, the President reaffirmed the TPDF’s role as a pillar of national security and peace, ensuring that Tanzania’s armed forces continue to operate with integrity while supporting the country’s development goals.
