The Mwanza Regional Police have apprehended 14 Burundian nationals suspected of entering Tanzania illegally, in an operation that underscores the country’s ongoing efforts to secure its borders. The arrests were made during two separate vehicle inspections in the region.
According to Mwanza Regional Police Commander, DCP Wilbroad Mutafungwa, 13 of the individuals were intercepted on November 23 around 7:30 a.m. at a roadblock in Busisi Village, Sengerema District. They were traveling in a passenger bus on its route from Kabanga in Ngara District to Mwanza. The vehicle, operating without proper authorization for transporting undocumented passengers, was stopped by authorities for inspection.
In the same operation, the police successfully detained the bus conductor, a 36-year-old resident of Nyegezi, Mwanza, while the driver reportedly managed to evade capture. Commander Mutafungwa stated that the detained individuals are being held in custody as investigations continue, and warned against the illegal transport of undocumented migrants, highlighting both legal and security risks.

The operation in Mwanza reflects a broader push across Tanzania to curb unauthorized migration, particularly among Burundian nationals. Illegal migration and human smuggling have long posed challenges in the East African region, prompting coordinated efforts between law enforcement and immigration authorities.
Experts note that while arrests are necessary to enforce the law, addressing the root causes of migration, including economic hardship and regional instability, is equally important. Human trafficking networks in Burundi continue to drive irregular migration, often exploiting vulnerable populations seeking safety or employment abroad.
The recent operation serves as a reminder of Tanzania’s commitment to upholding its immigration laws while balancing security with humanitarian considerations. Authorities continue to investigate the networks and routes involved, aiming to prevent further illegal crossings and ensure the safety of all individuals within the country’s borders.
