Tanzania is closely monitoring developments in innovative energy technologies, including nuclear technology, as the country explores opportunities to expand access to safe, reliable and sustainable energy, Energy Minister and Deputy President-elect Deogratius Ndejembi has said.

Ndejembi made the remarks while addressing the High-Level Meeting to Launch the Accelerated Technology Licensing for Applications at Sea (ATLAS) Programme in Washington, D.C., United States.

He said Tanzania remains committed to developing a diversified energy mix that includes hydropower, natural gas, solar, wind and other renewable energy sources.

According to Ndejembi, rapid changes taking place in the global energy sector require stronger international cooperation to develop solutions capable of strengthening energy security, supporting industrialisation, addressing climate change and ensuring access to reliable, affordable and sustainable energy.

He said Tanzania would continue to follow emerging energy technologies closely as part of efforts to identify solutions that can complement the country’s existing energy sources and meet growing demand.

Ndejembi also commended the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its efforts in facilitating the launch of the ATLAS programme, describing the initiative as an important step towards advancing innovative nuclear technologies and expanding the potential applications of nuclear energy globally.

The ATLAS initiative focuses on supporting the development and licensing of advanced nuclear technologies for maritime applications, an area that could open new possibilities for the future use of nuclear energy.

Ndejembi’s remarks underline Tanzania’s broader approach of combining different energy sources rather than relying on a single technology. The strategy is aimed at improving the reliability of electricity supplies while supporting economic growth, industrial development and the country’s long-term energy security.
