Tanzanian motorists are facing higher fuel prices this February, with significant increases set to take effect starting Wednesday, February 5, 2025.
The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura) recently announced the new fuel prices, which show a sharp rise in the cost of petrol, diesel, and kerosene.
In Dar es Salaam, the retail prices have climbed by 0.96% for petrol, 2.18% for diesel, and 1.25% for kerosene. Despite a notable drop in fuel importation costs, the price hike still affects local consumers. Petrol prices have seen an increase of 0.96%, now standing at TSh 2,820 per litre. Diesel is up by 2.18%, now priced at TSh 2,703 per litre, while kerosene rises by 1.25%, costing TSh 2,710 per litre.
Interestingly, the importation cost of fuel at the Port of Dar es Salaam has fallen by 4.90% for petrol, 14.94% for diesel, and 0.81% for kerosene. However, these reductions in fuel importation costs haven’t been passed on to consumers, and the price hikes will likely put additional pressure on households and businesses that rely on fuel for daily operations.

While the reasons for this discrepancy between import costs and retail prices remain unclear, the situation underscores the complex factors influencing fuel pricing in Tanzania, including government regulations and external market pressures. Many Tanzanians, especially those who rely on fuel for transportation or small businesses, will undoubtedly feel the effects of these price increases as they continue to impact their monthly expenses.
This latest round of price hikes comes at a time when many people were hoping for some relief, with global fuel prices having seen fluctuations recently. However, despite the fall in importation costs, Tanzanians will have to dig deeper into their pockets as they cope with the rise in fuel prices this month.
