Tanzania and Algeria have agreed to strengthen cooperation across key economic sectors, including energy, investment, tourism, and air transport, in a bid to deepen trade relations and promote shared prosperity.
The agreement was reached following talks between Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, and Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, in Cairo, Egypt, on December 19, 2025. The discussions were held on the sidelines of the Second Africa–Russia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where both countries emphasised the importance of boosting mutually beneficial economic ties.
During the meeting, the two ministers outlined plans to collaborate on energy projects, encourage investment, and expand tourism links. A key highlight was the agreement to establish direct flights between Dar es Salaam and Algeria, expected to enhance trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges, strengthening cultural and economic connections between the nations.
Ambassador Kombo also invited Algerian investors to explore opportunities in Tanzania, particularly in agriculture, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and other strategic sectors critical to the country’s economic growth. The call for investment reflects Tanzania’s broader agenda to attract foreign capital, foster industrial development, and create employment opportunities.
To ensure the smooth implementation of these initiatives, the two countries agreed to form a Joint Economic Commission tasked with coordinating activities, monitoring progress, and identifying new avenues for cooperation. This structured framework aims to convert diplomatic discussions into tangible economic outcomes.

The meeting was attended by Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Arts, Culture and Sports, Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi, alongside senior diplomats Ambassador Ali Bujiku and Ambassador Noel Kaganda. Analysts say the participation of multiple government officials highlights Tanzania’s commitment to turning bilateral dialogue into actionable strategies.
Strengthening ties with Algeria, a significant partner in North Africa, opens avenues for cross-continental trade, investment, and regional integration. The collaboration also aligns with both countries’ efforts to diversify their economies and enhance diplomatic and commercial networks, as noted in background on Algeria–Tanzania relations.
Direct air connectivity between the two countries is expected to stimulate tourism, improve business travel, and support investment flows. Connectivity is widely recognised as a key driver of economic growth, with air transport in Tanzania playing a crucial role in linking markets and facilitating trade.
Experts say that by combining strategic investment, infrastructure development, and strengthened diplomatic ties, Tanzania and Algeria can create a sustainable partnership that benefits both economies. The initiatives agreed upon mark a significant step toward a structured and long-term economic relationship, paving the way for industrial growth, stronger regional ties, and enhanced cooperation in sectors that drive national development.
