Malawi has turned to Tanzania’s Tanga Port to secure an emergency supply of petroleum products. Masoud Mrisha, the Tanga Port Manager, confirmed that a fuel tanker, MT High Freedom, docked at the port on January 1, 2025, carrying a total of 39,418 metric tonnes of fuel destined for Malawi’s National Oil Company.
The shipment comprised 18,515 metric tonnes of diesel and 20,902 metric tonnes of petrol. The vessel completed its offloading process and departed on January 3, 2025.
Malawi opted for Tanga Port due to severe congestion at other regional ports, including Dar es Salaam, Beira, and Nacala. These delays could have extended for months, worsening the country’s already pressing fuel challenges. Speaking about the decision, Malawi’s Minister of Energy, Ibrahim Matola, explained that the move was essential to maintain a steady fuel supply and protect the nation’s strategic reserves.
During a recent inspection of fuel deliveries in Malawi, Minister Matola underscored the importance of swift action, highlighting how logistical bottlenecks at traditional ports could have further disrupted fuel availability.
Tanga Port, one of East Africa’s oldest and most strategically located facilities, has seen significant improvements in recent years. Investments in infrastructure have boosted its capacity, allowing it to handle larger vessels and accommodate increased cargo volumes. These developments are making Tanga an attractive alternative for regional trade and logistics, especially during emergencies.

The port’s ability to efficiently manage the MT High Freedom’s cargo underscores its growing significance in supporting regional supply chains. The shipment to Malawi highlights the importance of adaptable solutions in addressing challenges such as port congestion, ensuring critical resources reach their destinations without delay.
This successful operation also reflects strong cooperation between Tanzania and Malawi, emphasizing the need for regional collaboration in overcoming logistical hurdles. As Tanga Port continues to expand and modernize, it is solidifying its role as a key hub for trade and essential commodity transportation in East Africa.
Malawi’s reliance on Tanga Port for this shipment demonstrates the port’s rising prominence and its capacity to respond effectively to urgent demands, setting a benchmark for efficiency and reliability in the region.
