Survivor Found Alive After Three Harrowing Days

Benedicto Rafael was rescued alive Monday night after spending three agonizing days trapped under the rubble of the collapsed Kariakoo building.

The rescue operation continues, driven by the determination of the Fire and Rescue Force and supported by military units and humanitarian agencies.

The collapse on November 16 has so far resulted in 16 fatalities, with over 80 individuals rescued from the debris. Despite the risks and challenges, search efforts remain relentless as authorities aim to account for all missing persons.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to leaving no stone unturned in rescue and recovery efforts. He has instructed law enforcement to locate the building’s owner for questioning, as initial investigations point to possible construction irregularities.

“The rescue mission will continue until the last person is found. At the same time, we must hold accountable those responsible for this tragedy,” said Majaliwa.

The Prime Minister also discouraged unofficial fundraising efforts, urging citizens to rely on the structured disaster response mechanisms under his office for coordinated support.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has conveyed her condolences to the victims’ families and praised rescue workers for their heroic efforts. She has also directed authorities to inspect urban buildings across Tanzania to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“The nation mourns the lives lost but also celebrates the resilience and unity shown in this time of crisis,” the President said through an official statement.
