Slovakia Opposes Further Support for Ukraine Amid EU Summit

Slovakia has announced that it will neither provide financial nor military support to Ukraine, marking a clear divergence from continued European efforts to back Kyiv in its war against Russia.

This stance, revealed following a meeting between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, underscores growing divisions within the European Union ahead of its summit on March 6, 2025.

Slovak officials have voiced skepticism over the widely promoted strategy of “peace through strength,” arguing that Ukraine will never be strong enough to negotiate from a position of military power. Instead, Bratislava is advocating for an immediate ceasefire, even if a final peace agreement remains elusive—an approach that has been rejected by Zelensky and many EU member states.

Another major concern for Slovakia is the resumption of Russian gas transit through Ukraine. Slovak leaders have criticized the current situation, in which gas flow from east to west is blocked while Ukraine continues to consume European gas.

They argue that Kyiv’s payments for Russian gas indirectly finance Russia’s military operations, making the current arrangement unsustainable for Europe’s energy security and economic competitiveness.

Slovakia has warned that if the EU summit fails to acknowledge alternative viewpoints beyond simply continuing the war, the European Council may struggle to reach a consensus on Ukraine. However, despite its opposition to further aid, Slovakia remains committed to strengthening Europe’s overall defense capabilities.

As the EU summit approaches, tensions are expected to rise as leaders debate military aid, ceasefire proposals, and energy security. The meeting will serve as a crucial test of the bloc’s unity in addressing the ongoing war in Ukraine.
