The Minister for Public Service Management and Good Governance, George Simbachawene, has called on public sector leaders to stop fearing capable employees and start empowering them with meaningful work.
Speaking in Dodoma, he addressed leaders from various government offices, urging them to have the confidence to delegate responsibilities to those who are capable, instead of holding back due to concerns about losing their own positions.
Simbachawene pointed out that there are skilled workers who are often left without tasks, which leads to a significant number of employees not fulfilling their duties even while present at the office. He emphasized that this situation negatively affects productivity and the overall functioning of public service.
The minister acknowledged that some leaders hesitate to assign tasks to their most competent staff out of fear that these employees might take over their roles or advance too quickly. However, he stressed that this kind of thinking only harms the government’s ability to function effectively.
Recent research, according to Simbachawene, has shown that more than 40% of public servants aren’t properly carrying out their responsibilities, despite being paid. He attributed this to leaders not fully utilizing the abilities of their staff, which leads to a lack of engagement and wasted potential within the workforce.
In addition to these concerns, Simbachawene introduced a series of directives aimed at improving public service management. He emphasized the importance of disciplinary measures for employees found guilty of misconduct, such as falsifying documents. He also encouraged the use of modern systems and technology to handle tasks that were previously done manually, promoting efficiency and reducing unnecessary delays.

The minister also urged public employers to be innovative, even when faced with financial constraints. He highlighted the importance of finding solutions and ensuring that critical projects continue without being held back due to budget limitations.
Simbachawene reminded the leaders that empowering capable staff and giving them the tasks they deserve not only helps improve individual performance but also strengthens the overall effectiveness of public services. By trusting and utilizing the full potential of employees, the government can provide better services to the people.
