Seven Dead, Nine Injured in Karagwe Crash

A devastating road accident in Karagwe District, Kagera Region, has left seven people dead and nine others injured.

The tragic incident took place on December 3, 2024, near a produce inspection post in Kihanga village, along Kyaka Road.

The collision occurred when a lorry, carrying sacks of mixed fruits including avocados, lost control while speeding. The out-of-control vehicle crashed into two stationary vehicles that had been parked at the inspection post for immigration checks.

According to Kagera Regional Police Commander Brasius Chatanda, the lorry driver’s speeding led to the crash, which could have been avoided with more caution. “The lorry collided with two parked vehicles. It was a clear case of negligence,” Commander Chatanda explained. The two vehicles were a Toyota Hiace passenger van and a Costa bus, both parked while passengers were being checked by immigration officers.

The crash resulted in the deaths of seven people – four women, two children, and one man. In addition, nine others were injured, including four men and five women. The victims’ identities have not yet been disclosed, as authorities are still working on notifying their families and continuing the investigation.

The local community, still reeling from the loss, has come together to mourn the victims. Many are expressing their shock and sadness over the tragic event, and the road has become a painful reminder of the need for greater road safety.

Local officials are urging all drivers to be more responsible, calling for better enforcement of traffic laws to prevent future accidents. “We must all learn from this tragedy and take every possible measure to ensure it doesn’t happen again,” said one community member.

The families of the victims begin to process the heartbreaking loss, the entire region is left to reflect on the importance of road safety and the devastating consequences of speeding. The authorities have promised to continue with their investigation and provide support to those affected by the crash.
