Chairperson of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and Presidential Candidate, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has appointed the Party’s Secretary General, Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi, as his running mate in the upcoming elections expected to be held in October 2025.
President Samia announced the appointment of Dr Nchimbi on Sunday, January 19, 2025 during a special general meeting held in Dodoma.
Dr Nchimbi was appointed as the Secretary General of CCM on January 15, 2024 at a Central Committee meeting held in Unguja, Zanzibar. He succeeded Daniel Chongolo, who resigned on November 29, 2023.
Dr Nchimbi’s political journey began in 1997 after graduating from the Institute of Development Management-Mzumbe (IDM-Mzumbe).
At that time, he was elected as a Member of the CCM National Executive Committee (NEC). In 1998, he was elected as the chairman of the party’s Youth Union (UVCCM).
IDM-Mzumbe was a higher education institution for the training of professional managers in the public and private sectors.
During the Third Phase Government under the late President Benjamin Mkapa, Dr Nchimbi was appointed as the Bunda District Commissioner, serving from 2003 to 2005. He later returned to his birthplace of Songea Urban to contest for parliament.
In the 2005 General Election, Dr Nchimbi contested for the Songea Urban Constituency against Edson Mbogoro from the opposition CHADEMA party. He won with 67.6 percent, while his closest rival, Mr Mbogoro, received 30.5 percent.
Immediately after becoming a member of parliament, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Sports by the fourth-term President, Dr Jakaya Kikwete.

He served in that position until 2006. He was then transferred to the Ministry of Employment, Labour, and Youth, where he served as Deputy Minister until February 2008.
In November 2010, he was transferred to the Ministry of Defence and National Defence, still as Deputy Minister, until November 2010.
In the 2010 elections, Dr Nchimbi emerged victorious in the Songea parliamentary seat for the second time, securing 59.9 percent of the total votes.
He was then appointed Minister of Information, Culture and Sports, a position he served in until 2012. He was then transferred to the Ministry of Home Affairs before resigning in December 2013.
In December 2016, the late President Dr John Magufuli appointed Dr Nchimbi as an ambassador and between 2016 and 2021, he served as Tanzania’s ambassador to Brazil. He then represented Tanzania in Egypt between 2022 and 2023.
Educational background
Dr Nchimbi began his primary education in Dar es Salaam at Oysterbay Primary School from 1980 to 1986. His father, Mzee John Nchimbi, was a Songea District police officer who retired as an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and Mtwara Regional Police Commander. His father was also a member of the CCM National Executive Committee (NEC) during the one-party system but left politics when the multi-party system began in Tanzania.
Dr Nchimbi attended Uru Secondary School in 1987 for Form One to Three before transferring to Sangu Secondary School to complete his O’level education in 1990. He then went to Forest Hill Secondary School in Mbeya Region for his A’level education from 1991 to 1993. .
He later joined IDM Mzumbe Morogoro from 1994 to 1997, where he obtained a Higher Diploma in Administration.
He was elected as a Member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of CCM after graduating from IDM and was elected as the Chairman of the Youth Union of the Party (UVCCM) in 1998.
From 1998 to 2003, Dr Nchimbi worked as an employee of the National Environmental Management Council (NEMC). He also studied at Mzumbe University from 2001 to 2003, and studied for a Master of Business Administration and a Higher Diploma in Banking and Finance. He then studied for a Doctorate degree at Mzumbe University from 2008 to 2011.
