Kenya’s President, Dr. William Ruto, called for a united and immediate response from regional leaders to help end the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which has lasted for over two decades.
Speaking at the EAC and SADC summit in Dar es Salaam on February 8, 2025, President Ruto emphasized that the time has come for the DRC to break free from its violent past, and regional collaboration was the key to achieving lasting peace.
“The fact that we have gathered here today, as leaders of the East African Community and Southern African Development Community, sends a strong message that now is the time for action,” President Ruto said. “The suffering of the Congolese people can no longer be ignored.”
The summit, which brought together heads of state from both regional blocs, was a chance to address the worsening situation in the DRC, which has resulted in the displacement of millions and caused widespread suffering. President Ruto acknowledged the complex nature of the crisis, which involves multiple groups with competing interests, but said this should not stop them from finding common ground for peace.
“We are here not just to discuss the political and military issues, but also to address the human impact especially on women and children who have borne the brunt of this conflict,” he added. “The scale of the suffering is unimaginable, and it’s time we worked together to change that.”

The Kenyan leader emphasized that the EAC and SADC nations have a responsibility to contribute to peace-building efforts in the DRC, providing both resources and support. He also stressed that this crisis can’t be solved through military action alone. What’s needed, he said, is a broad, diplomatic approach that tackles the root causes of the conflict.
“We cannot ignore the underlying issues that have fueled this conflict for so long,” President Ruto pointed out. “We need to focus on long-term solutions that bring everyone to the table, ensure safety for civilians, and rebuild trust.”
With the situation in the DRC showing no signs of easing, President Ruto’s call for regional solidarity was clear: peace in the DRC requires a collective effort from all African nations. “Our united front is the only way forward,” he said. “By working together, we can help the DRC move towards peace and stability.”

An interesting discussion is worth comment. I think that you should write more on this topic, it might not be a taboo subject but generally people are not enough to speak on such topics. To the next. Cheers
