Residents and small-scale business owners in Zanzibar are expressing growing frustration over frequent and unannounced power outages that are having a detrimental impact on their livelihoods.
Many are particularly concerned about the losses incurred by businesses dealing with perishable goods, including fish, juices, and fruits.
Local traders have reported that the sporadic power cuts not only hinder their ability to operate effectively but also lead to wastage of stock, directly affecting their income and livelihood. “Every time the power goes out, we lose money. It’s a continuous cycle of uncertainty that we have to deal with,” said one local fish vendor.
The situation has drawn attention from various stakeholders, with many calling for urgent action to address the issues surrounding the electricity supply in the region.

The unpredictable outages have led to a sense of anxiety among consumers and business owners alike, as they struggle to maintain their operations amid inconsistent power availability.
In response to the mounting complaints, the Minister for Water, Energy, and Minerals, Shaib Hassan Kaduara, has acknowledged the challenges faced by the electricity supply system. He attributed the ongoing power issues to the increasing number of electricity consumers and investors in Zanzibar, stressing that the demand for power has outpaced the current infrastructure’s capacity to deliver reliable service. “We are aware of the frustrations that our citizens are facing, and we are working on strategies to improve the situation,” Kaduara stated.
