Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba has urged religious leaders and citizens alike to safeguard the country’s long-standing tradition of unity and peace, warning that division and hatred only weaken a nation.
Dr. Nchemba delivered the message on Thursday, December 25, 2025, while attending a Christmas Day service at the Azania Front Lutheran Cathedral in Dar es Salaam. Speaking to worshippers, he said the true spirit of Christmas goes beyond celebration and calls for reflection on values that hold society together, particularly peace, mutual respect, and national solidarity.
The Prime Minister cautioned that internal conflicts, especially those driven by hatred or political and social divisions, never produce winners. Instead, he said, they leave deep scars that affect every citizen and slow national progress.
“There is no victory in conflicts fought among ourselves,” he said. “When a nation is divided, everyone pays the price. Unity is not a choice; it is a necessity for our collective future.”
He highlighted the far-reaching benefits of peace, noting that a stable environment supports economic growth, strengthens social welfare, and allows citizens to contribute meaningfully to national development. According to Dr. Nchemba, peace provides the space for innovation, investment, and cooperation across all sectors of society.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting peace and security while continuing to promote civic education, especially among young people. He said nurturing patriotism and respect for national values is key to preserving unity in the years ahead. Tanzania, he added, has earned recognition in the region for its stability, a legacy that must be protected.

“Our country has remained a symbol of peace, unity, and calm in Africa,” he said. “This stability is built on justice, ethical conduct, tolerance, and love for our nation.”
Dr. Nchemba called on religious leaders to remain active partners in promoting harmony and countering messages of hate, misinformation, and division. He said faith institutions play a critical role in shaping moral values and guiding communities toward peaceful coexistence.
During the service, the Prime Minister also conveyed Christmas greetings from President Samia Suluhu Hassan, wishing Christians and all Tanzanians a joyful and peaceful festive season. He encouraged citizens to celebrate responsibly, with love and calmness, while strengthening national unity.
In his sermon, Bishop Dr. Alex Malasusa, head of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania and leader of the Eastern and Coastal Diocese, strongly criticized behaviors that damage social harmony. He condemned acts of spreading falsehoods, tarnishing reputations, and deliberately creating divisions within communities.
Dr. Malasusa observed that some individuals are unsettled by peaceful coexistence and attempt to disrupt it for personal interests. He urged Tanzanians to reject such actions and protect the values that have kept the nation together for decades.
