Tanzania is advancing its railway modernization with the arrival of two new electric multiple-unit (EMU) trains from South Korea, adding to the already operational set introduced in April.

These trains, featuring eight wagons each, are set to commence services between Dar Es Salaam and Dodoma starting July 25, 2024. This move marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to enhance its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) network

Upcoming Express Services

In addition to the new Dar Es Salaam-Dodoma route, an express train service will launch this Friday between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro. These developments are part of a broader strategy to improve travel efficiency and reduce journey times across key routes

Advanced Train Features

The EMU trains, purchased from Hyundai Rotem Company, are equipped with modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, air conditioning, special needs seating, and CCTV for security. Each train can accommodate up to 589 passengers and travel at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. These trains are designed to replace the older, less efficient meter-gauge railway system, significantly cutting travel times

Phased SGR Development

The SGR project is being developed in six phases. The first phase, connecting Dar es Salaam to Morogoro, is 98% complete and currently undergoing trials. The second phase, from Morogoro to Makutupora, is nearing completion and will soon link with Dodoma. Future phases will extend the network to Tabora, Isaka, Mwanza, and Kigoma, eventually connecting Tanzania to Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of the East African Railway Master Plan

Economic and Logistical Benefits

The SGR is expected to reduce the Dar es Salaam to Morogoro journey to two hours, compared to four hours by bus and five hours by the old railway. This will not only enhance passenger convenience but also improve the efficiency of goods transportation, boosting Tanzania’s economy
