The newly appointed Minister for Agriculture, Daniel Godfrey Chongolo, has assured senior officials and staff of the ministry that the government’s development agenda will continue smoothly by building on the foundation laid by his predecessor.
He emphasized that the achievements recorded so far must not only be preserved but expanded to deliver stronger productivity and impact across the sector.
Chongolo delivered this message during an official handover ceremony held on November 18, 2025, in Dodoma, where he received the mantle from the outgoing minister, Hussein Bashe. The event brought together top officials, including the Deputy Minister, David Silinde, the Permanent Secretary, Gerald Mweli, and the Deputy Permanent Secretary responsible for Irrigation and agricultural mechanization, Engineer Athumani Kilundumya. Directors and heads of agencies under the ministry were also present.
During the ceremony, Chongolo commended Bashe for his commitment, strategic thinking, and the ambitious projects developed during his tenure. He noted that many of the initiatives introduced under the previous administration had transformed the sector and provided long-term benefits to farmers and the national economy. Chongolo affirmed that such progress should not be disrupted, stressing that consistency is vital for safeguarding the sector’s stability and long-term success.

He further stated that the ministry will maintain a people-centered approach, ensuring that farmers’ needs remain at the heart of every decision. By prioritizing innovation, improved extension services, and modern production systems, the minister pledged to strengthen the sector’s capacity to support economic growth. According to him, the goal is to enhance output, reduce production costs, and expand opportunities for youth and women.
Outgoing minister Bashe used the occasion to congratulate Chongolo on his new role, expressing confidence that the ministry is in capable hands. He promised full cooperation whenever needed to ensure that the vision of President Samia Suluhu Hassan continues to be implemented effectively. Bashe added that the sector has made substantial progress in recent years, including expanded irrigation schemes, better market systems, and increased investment in research and technology.
The ceremony reflected the government’s commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector as a cornerstone of national development. Officials underscored that Tanzania depends heavily on agriculture for employment, food security, and export earnings, making continuity and leadership stability essential for sustained growth.
