The Morogoro Regional Administrative Secretary, Dr Mussa Ali Mussa, has begun implementing President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s directive to put in place strategies to mitigate the potential impacts of El Niño rains expected later this year.
Dr Mussa began implementing the directive on September 4, 2026, a day after newly appointed Morogoro Regional Commissioner Queen Cuthbert Sendiga assumed office and emphasised the importance of acting on the President’s instructions.
As part of the preparedness measures, the Regional Administrative Secretary convened a meeting involving key stakeholders to assess potential risks and establish coordinated response measures.
The meeting brought together representatives from the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), Morogoro Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (MORUWASA), Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), the Red Cross, the Fire and Rescue Force, the National Environment Management Council (NEMC), the Wami-Ruvu Basin Water Board and officials from the Morogoro Municipal Council.
Dr Mussa said the main objective of the meeting was to assess preparedness and identify measures that could reduce or completely prevent the potential damage associated with the forecast heavy rains.

He stressed that every institution has a specific role to play, including ensuring that members of the public receive timely information and education on precautionary measures.
“Everyone should identify their responsibility and determine what needs to be done to prepare for the El Niño rains,” Dr Mussa said.
He urged the participating institutions to work closely and take proactive measures rather than waiting for disasters to occur before responding.
The meeting is part of broader regional efforts to strengthen preparedness and coordination among government institutions and other stakeholders, particularly in areas that could be vulnerable to flooding and other weather-related impacts.
According to the latest forecast from the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), El Niño-related rains are expected between October and December 2026, with authorities warning that the season could bring heavy rainfall in some areas.
The regional authorities are therefore encouraging institutions and communities to remain alert and take appropriate precautionary measures ahead of the expected rainy season.
