The Minister for Home Affairs, Innocent Bashungwa, has urged the Immigration Department to play a key role in promoting Tanzania’s tourism by ensuring visitors receive exceptional service upon entering the country.
He emphasized that a welcoming experience not only supports tourism but also encourages visitors to speak positively about Tanzania abroad.
Bashungwa made these remarks on January 10, 2025, during his visit to inspect the progress of the Shumba Mjini Port construction in Micheweni, North Pemba, Zanzibar. The port, which was previously an informal landing point, is being transformed into a modern facility. Historically, the site was used by travelers crossing to Mombasa, Kenya, but its development now signals a new chapter in facilitating trade and tourism.
Speaking to officials, Bashungwa stressed that the Immigration Department has an important role in shaping the perception of visitors. “We must ensure our visitors are welcomed with the best possible services. When tourists come here, receive excellent treatment, and experience our hospitality, they not only contribute to our economy but also become unofficial ambassadors for Tanzania,” he said.
He highlighted the need for professionalism in handling visitors, noting that excellent service would reinforce the country’s reputation as a preferred destination.
Bashungwa took the opportunity to praise the leadership of Zanzibar’s President, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, for his dedication to driving economic growth and infrastructure development. He pointed out that ongoing efforts to modernize Zanzibar’s ports and other infrastructure were creating new opportunities for trade and tourism.

“The work being done under President Mwinyi’s leadership is remarkable. It is clear that these efforts are opening Zanzibar to a world of economic possibilities,” Bashungwa said.
The modernization of Shumba Mjini Port, Bashungwa explained, will enhance trade, travel, and tourism by providing a formal and efficient gateway for residents and international visitors. This, he said, will contribute significantly to Zanzibar’s economy by facilitating easier movement of people and goods.
“The completion of this port will be a game-changer for the region. It will not only support local businesses but also improve the overall economic outlook for Zanzibar,” he added.
