The Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign is about to expand its reach to six regions across Tanzania, with a special focus on helping inmates in prisons.
The campaign aims to provide legal assistance to those who need it most, ensuring that even prisoners have access to legal resources.
Esther Msambazi, the National Coordinator for the campaign at the Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs, shared these updates during a two-day training for local coordinators. These district-level coordinators will oversee the smooth rollout of the campaign, ensuring it’s implemented effectively within their areas.
Msambazi emphasized that the role of these coordinators is crucial to ensure that as many citizens as possible are able to receive legal help. She mentioned that the campaign has already reached 11 regions and will continue in the remaining 15. For this month, efforts are focused on six regions.
“Our goal is to reach people across the country, making sure no one is left out, even in the most remote areas. We have a team of experts here to ensure we all understand how to deliver the campaign properly,” Msambazi said.
The Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve access to justice. It aims to make legal services more accessible to people who have traditionally faced barriers, such as those in rural areas and incarcerated individuals.

Through this initiative, citizens will have the opportunity to receive legal advice on various issues, from criminal cases to civil matters, ultimately helping to close the gap in legal services between different regions of the country. The campaign’s broader vision is to empower Tanzanians to know their legal rights and take steps toward justice.
The success of this initiative depends on collaboration between government officials, legal professionals, and the public. The Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs remains committed to ensuring that all Tanzanians, regardless of where they live or their financial situation, have access to the legal support they need.
By targeting prison populations, the campaign is also addressing injustices within the correctional system. Inmates will be able to receive the legal guidance they need, which could result in reduced wrongful imprisonment and better conditions for those serving sentences.
