Arusha Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda held discussions with the Russian Ambassador to Tanzania, Andrey Avetisyan, aiming to strengthen bilateral ties between Arusha and Russia.
The meeting, held On October 17, 2024,at the regional office in Arusha, marked a significant step toward enhancing cooperation in multiple sectors, including tourism, education, and economic development.
During the talks, Commissioner Makonda emphasized the importance of international partnerships in driving regional social and economic growth. Arusha, known as a gateway for tourism due to its proximity to some of Tanzania’s most famous national parks, has been seeking to diversify its economic base while boosting its global profile. Makonda noted that collaboration with Russia could open up numerous opportunities for the region.

“Arusha stands to gain from strong international relationships, particularly in sectors that directly impact our local communities,” said Makonda. “By fostering deeper ties with Russia, we aim to explore avenues for economic development and cultural exchange that will benefit both sides.”
The Russian Ambassador Andrey Avetisyan echoed similar sentiments, expressing Russia’s commitment to expanding its engagement with Arusha and Tanzania as a whole. Ambassador Avetisyan stressed the need for long-term cooperation that would not only focus on trade and investment but also promote knowledge-sharing, particularly in fields like tourism and education.
Ambassador Avetisyan highlighted Russia’s interest in exploring investment opportunities in key sectors, including agriculture, mining, and energy. Both sides agreed that continued dialogue would be essential in identifying specific projects that could benefit from Russian investment.
