As Kariakoo transitions into a 24-hour business hub, efforts to strengthen security and improve infrastructure are gaining momentum.
Authorities are moving forward with key initiatives, including the installation of surveillance cameras and improved street lighting, to support traders and shoppers in the bustling commercial center.
During the official launch of round-the-clock trading on February 27, Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and thriving business environment.
To enhance public safety, the Dar es Salaam City Council has partnered with a government agency to install 40 CCTV cameras across Kariakoo. The first phase of this project, set to begin on March 1, 2025, has been allocated a budget of Sh514.3 million. Officials say the surveillance system will help deter crime and improve security, giving business owners and customers greater confidence to operate at night.
In addition to the security cameras, the Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) is preparing to install more than 700 streetlights in the area. This initiative is expected to make Kariakoo safer after dark and encourage more businesses to embrace the 24-hour trading model.
Despite these efforts, some business owners feel the security measures should have been in place before the 24-hour trading launch.
“I think the government moved too fast with this. The idea is great, but many streets are still dark, and that’s why some traders are hesitant to open at night,” said Zuhura Khamis, a Kariakoo trader.

While turnout for nighttime business has been relatively low so far, authorities believe that once the security improvements are complete, more traders will feel comfortable operating late into the night.
In response to concerns, Commissioner Chalamila assured traders that the government is prioritizing security and infrastructure improvements.
“We want this 24-hour economy to succeed. That’s why we are working on these projects as quickly as possible to create a safe and supportive environment for businesses to thrive,” he said.
Kariakoo’s transition into a 24-hour marketplace marks a significant shift for businesses in Dar es Salaam. While challenges remain, the ongoing investments in security and infrastructure signal a long-term commitment to making the initiative successful.
With the upcoming installation of surveillance cameras and better street lighting, traders and customers alike are hopeful that Kariakoo will soon become a vibrant and secure destination for round-the-clock commerce.
