Tanzania’s President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has appointed Professor Palamagamba John Aidan Kabudi as Minister of State in the President’s Office, State House (Special Duties), signaling a strategic reshuffle at the heart of the country’s executive leadership.

The announcement was made late on Thursday, January 8, 2026, with Prof. Kabudi scheduled to be sworn in on January 13, 2026, at State House, Chamwino in Dodoma.

Prof. Kabudi, a former Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, brings decades of experience in government, law, and diplomacy. In his previous role, he was responsible for overseeing government communication strategies, cultural promotion, support for creative industries, and national sports programs. His new position, in the President’s Office, places him closer to the center of executive decision-making, where he is expected to manage special assignments and advise the President on sensitive national and strategic issues.

Globally recognized as a legal scholar, Prof. Kabudi has combined his academic expertise with extensive public service. He is an authority on constitutional and international law and has served in multiple key government positions, earning a reputation as a methodical and pragmatic leader. Analysts suggest that his experience makes him particularly well-suited to a role that requires both advisory skills and the ability to coordinate across government ministries.

Prof. Kabudi’s career spans some of Tanzania’s most important portfolios. He previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, representing the country in regional and international forums, and contributing to shaping Tanzania’s foreign policy and diplomatic engagements. He also served as Minister of Constitutional and Legal Affairs, overseeing critical legal reforms and advising on constitutional matters.
