Israel has confirmed that Abu Obeida, the spokesperson for Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City.
The strike targeted a residential area in the Rimal neighborhood on August 30, 2025, resulting in several casualties, including Obeida, according to Israeli authorities.
Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, praised the operation as a “flawless execution,” commending the efforts of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency. The announcement marks a major development in the ongoing and volatile conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Abu Obeida, whose real name was Hudayfa Samir Abdallah al-Kahlout, had been the face of Hamas’s military communications since 2007. He gained prominence for his public statements during key confrontations, most notably during the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, which resulted in significant casualties and the abduction of civilians. His role had made him one of the most recognizable figures in the organization.

While Israel has officially confirmed his death, Hamas has not released an immediate statement verifying the strike. The incident comes amid continued military operations and airstrikes in Gaza, which have severely impacted civilians. The United Nations reports that over 90% of Gaza’s population has been displaced, and humanitarian conditions remain critical.
Analysts suggest that the killing of Abu Obeida may further escalate tensions in the region, complicating efforts to achieve a ceasefire. It underscores the ongoing volatility of the Israel-Hamas conflict and highlights the humanitarian toll on civilians caught in the crossfire.
